Yep, attended another webinar this afternoon. I’ve been out of school for almost 7 months at this point and have yet to find a full-time professional position, so I’ve got to find a way to learn some of the skills I’d be learning on the job somehow!

Today’s webinar was sponsored by LearningTimes and focused on how to create video-game-like training modules for staff. I was more interested in how I could use these techniques with students rather than staff, and I think I got some good ideas along the lines of what Mary Snyder would come up with. A bit beyond my technical expertise at present, but nothing that can’t be fixed with some self-education!

Improving the Reference Interview: An Instructional Designer Introduces Video Game Design for Staff Development

  • Use branching narratives (a la Choose Your Own Adventure)
  • Video game style
    • Modeling
      • How would an expert approach each behavior/task?
      • How would a novice?
      • What’s the reality of behavior?—a combination of both
    • Story Building
      • What are the elements needed for each situation?
        • Situation; Assistant’s Text; Feedback
        • Without Assistant’s Text (which provides context), this is essentially a hollow multiple-choice quiz
      • Outcomes
        • E.g. 11 total; 2 good, 3 acceptable, 3 poor, 3 fail
      • Use a narrative map to sketch out each situation, with its associated Assistant’s Text, Feedback, and Outcome
    • Prototyping
      • PowerPoint
    • Production
      • Translate PowerPoint to Captivate
    • Implementation
      • Launch product!
    • Evaluation
  • When proposing this to your colleagues, don’t call it “video gaming”! Call it “branching narratives.” You’ll get more buy-in this way.
